Where Do I Vote Again?

With the 2008 election season rapidly approaching, the Johnson County Elections Office has partnered with AIMS to help inform citizens on where they need to go to cast their vote. By entering their home address and zip code on the front page of the newly created JoCoPolo website, interested voters will be given the name of their assigned polling place. To get a map with directions to a polling location, click on the “Advanced Search” option, fill in the required text boxes, then press “Go”.

If you would like to integrate the polling place locator into your own applications this too is available through a clearly documented, easy to use web service. Please contact the Mapper Of the Day if you would like to learn more about the polling place locator web service.

Planimetric Data Updates

AIMS strives to provide data that is both accurate and current. As part of this effort many of the planimetric layers were recently updated. These updates are available to view through Johnson County Online Mapping or for download through Digital Data Request.Here are a few of the highlights:

The buildings layer was updated in-house by the AIMS staff. The staff used building permits and visual checks across the entire county to make changes. 6,729 new buildings were added, 2,570 were deleted, and 2,880 were changed. This update brought the building layer current to the 2006 photography. Another significant change was the addition of minimum, maximum, and average elevation information as well as height information (based off of the Lidar data). AIMS expects to update again once the 2008 photography is available.

The edge of pavement layer which includes paved and gravel roads and parking lots was updated by MJ Harden and AIMS.AIMS completed a pilot of approximately 50 square miles and MJ Harden completed another 250 square miles. 3,845 features were added and 4,543 were updated. These changes resulted in 3.28 new square miles of edge (2,100 acres). AIMS expects to review the edge of pavement again once the 2008 photography is available.

The other building layer which consists of fences and retaining walls was updated randomly while updating other features. 3,615 features were added, 752 deleted, and 361 changed.

Index and intermediate contour (10 foot and 2 foot) layers were updated by Optimal Geomatics. These new contours are based off of the 2006 Lidar data captured in a joint effort with USGS and breakline data captured by Optimal Geomatics.
